The Kerala High Court has expressed serious concern over the alleged ill-treatment of students in the state’s medical colleges, particularly in cases involving caste-based discrimination and harassment. The observations came during the hearing of an anticipatory bail plea filed by Dr. M.K. Ram, former Head of the Department of Anatomy at Kannur Medical College, who has been accused in connection with the suicide of a first-year BDS student earlier this year.
According to official records, Nithin Raj, a first-year BDS student at a private management college in Anjarakandy, Kannur, was found dead on the college campus on April 10, 2026. The prosecution has alleged that Nithin was subjected to harassment on the basis of his caste and complexion, and that Dr. Ram was the prime accused in the case. Following the incident, Dr. Ram was dismissed from his position at the college.
