Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds has wreaked havoc on the power infrastructure in Yadgir district, Karnataka, with authorities reporting the collapse of nearly 500 electricity poles and 100 transformers across two divisions. The damage, caused during Sunday’s severe weather, has left large parts of the district without electricity for over 24 hours, and restoration work is proceeding slowly due to the scale of destruction.
According to officials from the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company (GESCOM), the hardest-hit areas include Yadgir and Shorapur divisions, where downed poles and damaged transformers have disrupted power supply to both urban and rural communities. Executive Engineer Rajshekhar Bilwar of the Shorapur division told *The Hindu* that restoration teams are working on-site and have managed to restore about 60% of the affected network so far. “We are carrying out restoration operations on a war footing,” Bilwar stated, acknowledging the severity of the damage.
