In response to the ongoing Ebola outbreaks in Africa, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda convened a high-level review meeting in New Delhi to assess India's preparedness and response measures. This comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed concerns that the epidemic is outpacing response efforts. According to the WHO, 220 suspected deaths have been reported in the ongoing outbreak, highlighting the need for swift action.
The review meeting, attended by senior health officials, including the Health Secretary, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and Director General of Health Services (DGHS), aimed to discuss India's readiness to handle potential Ebola cases. The Indian health ministry has assured that no case of Ebola has been reported in the country so far. However, the ongoing outbreaks in Africa serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and preparedness. The WHO has declared the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola a public health emergency of international concern, while the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has classified it as a public health emergency of continental security (PHECS).
