New Delhi, June 25 — Veteran cricketer and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has come out in strong support of Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant, attributing the wicketkeeper-batter’s emotional post-match interview to the intense pressures of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pant’s unfiltered comments after his team’s loss to the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday triggered widespread debate on social media, with many questioning his professionalism. However, Gavaskar, speaking on a prominent sports show, dismissed the criticism and instead placed responsibility on the gruelling demands of the IPL schedule and high-stakes environment.
Gavaskar, known for his sharp cricketing insights, argued that the IPL is a “high-pressure tournament” that often pushes players to their emotional limits. “The IPL is not a walk in the park. It’s a tournament where every match matters, where every decision is scrutinised, and where the expectations are sky-high,” Gavaskar stated. He emphasized that players are under immense mental strain and that emotional outbursts, though not ideal, are sometimes a reflection of that pressure. “Is that too much to ask — to understand that players are human too?” Gavaskar questioned, underscoring the need for empathy from fans and pundits alike.
