A District and Sessions Court in Karur, Tamil Nadu, on Monday sentenced three men to double life imprisonment for the murder of social activist R. Jaganathan, who had campaigned against illegal stone quarries in the region. The court also imposed a fine of ₹2 lakh each on Sakthivel, Selvakumar, and Ranjith Kumar after finding them guilty of the 2022 murder.
Jaganathan, a resident of Kalipalayam in Pugalur taluk, Karur district, had been actively demanding the closure of illegal stone quarries operating in the area. He had repeatedly petitioned government officials to take action against these unauthorized operations. Tragically, his efforts came to a violent end on September 14, 2022, when he was deliberately run over by a truck linked to a quarry near K. Paramathi. The incident occurred just one day after the Department of Geology and Mining had shut down a nearby quarry at Kalipalayam following complaints of illegal mining.
