Major Shake-up at CBSE: Prashant Lokhande Appointed New Chairman, Varun Bhardwaj as New Secretary

The Union government on Tuesday night announced a major reshuffle in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), appointing a new chairman and secretary. Prashant Lokhande Sitaram has been named the new chairman of CBSE, while Varun Bhardwaj has been appointed as the board’s new secretary. The appointments come at a time when the functioning of the CBSE is under scrutiny, and both officials will face the daunting task of reforming the board’s systems.
New chairman Prashant Lokhande Sitaram is a 2001-batch IAS officer currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs. His selection was based on his extensive experience and contributions to educational administration. Lokhande belongs to the AGMUT cadre and holds a BE in Mechanical Engineering from Pune University, as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering from NITIE Mumbai. He has been awarded the ‘Rajya Puraskar (Gold)’ twice for ‘Meritorious Service.’ Fluent in English, Hindi, and Marathi, Lokhande has held key positions including Joint Secretary, Director, Deputy Secretary, Private Secretary, Counsellor, Deputy Commissioner, and Secretary.
