A majestic wild elephant named 'Chillikomban' has died after being washed away in the strong currents of the contour canal of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, on Saturday (May 23, 2026). The 20-foot deep contour canal is part of the PAP, which is a major irrigation project that spans across the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR). According to reports, the tusker got trapped in the canal while attempting to drink water around 4 p.m. on Saturday.
