Bhatkal (Uttara Kannada, Karnataka): Eleven members of a family were killed in a tragic accident after a sudden flash flood in the Tattehalklu river in Bhatkal, Uttara Kannada district, on Saturday afternoon. Rescue operations are still underway at the site, while four others have been rescued and hospitalised. Officials said the disaster was caused by a sudden rise in water levels and strong currents in the river.
Local administration, police and NDRF teams rushed to the spot as soon as the incident was reported. So far, eleven bodies have been recovered from the river. The deceased include two men and nine women. All the victims were residents of Shardahol village and belonged to the same family and neighbourhood. The identified victims are Lakshmi Madeva Naik, Lakshmi Shivaram Naik, Malati Jattappa Naik, Mastamma Manjunath Naik, Lakshmi Annappa Naik, Jyoti Naik and Umesh Manjunath Naik, among others.
