A tragic incident unfolded in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka on Saturday, when several members of the same family, who had gone to collect clams in the Tattehokkalu river, were caught in a sudden surge. So far, eleven people have died in the incident, while several others have been rescued. The entire area is now shrouded in grief.
According to information, a group of fourteen people from Shiral village in Bhathkal’s Shardahol area had gone to the river to collect clams on Saturday morning. The group included twelve women and two men. It is reported that around 11 am, as they were collecting clams on the riverbank, the water level suddenly rose, sweeping them away in the strong currents.
Of the eleven bodies recovered from the river, about two were men and nine were women. The deceased have been identified as Lakshmi Madeva Naik, Lakshmi Shivaram Naik, Malati Jattappa Naik, Mastamma Manjunath Naik, Lakshmi Annappa Naik, Jyoti Naik, and Umesh Manjunath Naik, among others. All the deceased are said to be from the same family and neighborhood.
