The Bazarpet police in Kalyan, Maharashtra, arrested Vinod Vasaikar on Monday, three days after he allegedly murdered his 25-year-old daughter, Gayatri Vasaikar, in what is suspected to be an honour killing linked to her inter-caste marriage. According to Inspector Babasaheb Dukle, the accused confessed during interrogation that he killed his daughter because she had married a man from a different caste, which he claimed brought "disrepute" to the family.
Gayatri had married her partner a few days prior to the incident, defying her family’s strong opposition. Police sources revealed that Vasaikar had arranged two engagement ceremonies for her in the past, both of which she refused. Despite his efforts, Gayatri went ahead with her marriage, escalating the resentment he harboured toward her. On the day of the murder, Gayatri had come to her mother’s house in the Rachna Royal building in Kalyan for personal work. A dispute broke out between father and daughter over the marriage, which quickly turned violent. Vasaikar allegedly took a sharp weapon from the house and stabbed Gayatri, causing her death on the spot.
