Guruvar (Thursday) afternoon saw a sudden massive traffic jam in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. The congestion occurred on the Meerut–Muradnagar road, where buses were lined up for several kilometres. According to local media reports, the main causes of the gridlock were the unusually high number of vehicles on the roads during Ganesh Visarjan and the sudden spike in demand for public transport.
Sources from the Meerut Police Commissionerate stated that the city saw a significant influx of pilgrims during Ganesh Chaturthi, leading to a sharp rise in the number of vehicles on the roads. Additionally, the sudden surge in demand for public transport meant that buses struggled to reach their destinations on time, resulting in severe traffic congestion. Buses were seen lined up on both sides of the road.
Local residents reported that the gridlock caused considerable hardship for commuters, with many spending hours stuck in traffic. Fuel consumption among vehicles also saw a substantial increase. Police officers swiftly took action to manage the situation, identifying alternative routes and re-routing traffic.
