Mumbai’s monorail service faced a severe crisis yesterday due to torrential rainfall. A sudden technical failure in the power supply system of the monorail track near Andheri in eastern Mumbai caused the train to come to a halt mid-air. As a result, around 200 passengers were stranded in the air for nearly an hour. Despite the driver’s swift efforts, power restoration failed. Locals and police were alerted, and they rushed to the spot to assist in safely evacuating the passengers.
Earlier, a Mumbai Police spokesperson confirmed that water had seeped into the train’s power supply system, leading to a short circuit. Though passengers initially panicked, they were gradually helped down by local authorities and rescue teams. A few passengers sustained minor injuries. Firefighters and rescue workers were deployed at the site to ensure the safe disembarkation of passengers.
The Mumbai Monorail authorities have assured that stricter monitoring of tracks and power systems will be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future. They have also advised suspending monorail services during heavy rainfall. With heavy monsoon predictions for Mumbai, similar to last year, authorities remain on high alert.
