Pakistan’s battle against terrorism is growing increasingly dire. A recent report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) has uncovered alarming statistics. According to the report, terrorists killed an average of more than two soldiers every day in May 2024. Over the month, a total of 68 soldiers lost their lives, while 71 civilians also perished. Additionally, 37 soldiers were injured in terrorist attacks. The report was released at a time when Pakistan’s army chief, General Asim Munir, had recently claimed that intelligence-based operations were being intensified against militants.
The PICSS report highlights that after relatively calm conditions in March and April, May saw a resurgence in terrorist violence. Across Pakistan, a total of 128 terrorist attacks were recorded during the month, including four suicide bombings. Balochistan was the worst-affected province, with 71 attacks—a 109% increase compared to April, which saw 34 attacks. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the capital, Islamabad, also witnessed significant terrorist activity.
