A new rail-route survey has been launched between Nagpur and Pune to speed up rail travel between Maharashtra’s key cities. Currently, the journey on this route takes roughly 8–10 hours. However, once the new survey is complete, travel time is expected to drop by an hour and a half, offering passengers major relief. The project is being planned jointly by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and Central Railway.
The new route will shorten the distance between Nagpur and Pune, saving both time and cost for travellers. Although rail services already exist on this corridor, their speed and journey duration needed improvement—hence the need for a new alignment. The fresh survey aims to introduce a shorter, faster rail link. The project will also make it easier to connect eastern and western Maharashtra.
According to officials from Central Railway, the new rail-route survey will begin in the coming period, and all necessary technical and administrative approvals are being secured. An approximate budget for the project has also been finalised, with funding to be arranged through the state and central governments. Besides cutting travel time between Nagpur and Pune, the new route is expected to enhance the overall quality of rail services.
