The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has initiated proposals for the construction of a high-speed corridor between Bengaluru and Chennai. The project aims to reduce the current 350 km distance to 220 km. Officials have stated that this could cut travel time from six hours to just three.
Plans for the high-speed corridor are being developed under the National Highways Development Project (NHDP). The project is estimated to require an investment of ₹20,000 crore. Once completed, it is expected to bring significant changes to the transportation system between Bengaluru and Chennai.
Currently, the journey between Bengaluru and Chennai via the existing National Highway (NH44) takes six to seven hours. The high-speed corridor aims to halve this travel time. Upon completion, the project is likely to boost commerce, tourism, and employment opportunities between the two cities.
