Nine people, including eight from the same extended family, lost their lives on Sunday after being swept away by a sudden high tide while collecting shellfish in the Kalinatti stream near Shirali in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka. Two others are still missing, and three survivors were rescued from the estuary where the stream meets the sea.
According to police, the group had entered the estuary without a boat and were standing on the sandy riverbed when the tide surged unexpectedly, likely due to recent rainfall. “They were not tourists but local residents who went to collect shellfish for food,” said police officials. “They underestimated the force of the current and did not account for the high tide. As the water rushed in, they panicked, held hands, and were pulled under one after another.” The tragedy unfolded in a matter of minutes, with all nine drowning despite being together.
