A high-intensity pig hunt carried out by a 20-member gang in Malappuram district has become the talk of the state. Locals say the single-day operation left more than 40 pigs dead, making it one of the largest pig hunts ever recorded in the area.
The hunt took place in a forested pocket of Malappuram district. The group entered the forest at dawn and launched the drive immediately. Most of the weapons used were firearms. The team moved fast, systematically culling the animals. By the time officials arrived, the hunters had already left, leaving little trace for the customary post-operation survey and deeper enquiry.
According to local residents, such organised hunts are rare here. Yet the wild boar population has surged because of food scarcity or growing human-wildlife conflict. The state forest department has permitted selective culls to control the numbers. However, critics point out that many drives still happen outside the legal framework, with rogue groups taking the law into their own hands.
