The police remand of Pathnamajra MLA Surjit Singh Rakhra, from Patiala, has been extended by another seven days. This decision was taken today by the Patiala Sessions Court. Earlier, his police remand was set to expire today after seven days. Now, he will be held in police custody for a total of 14 days.
The case began last week when a patient died at a private hospital in Pathnamajra. The family had accused the hospital management and MLA Surjit Singh Rakhra of negligence. During the investigation, several witness statements also implicated the MLA. The police had summoned him for questioning and later took him into seven-day police remand.
Today, the police filed an application in the Sessions Court seeking an extension of the remand. The police argued that they still need to question several witnesses and that the MLA’s custody is necessary. In response, the MLA’s lawyer contended that the case was being linked to political motives and that there was no basis for his arrest. However, the court accepted the police’s request and extended the remand.
