One of Kolkata’s busiest rail corridors—the Howrah–Sealdah line—has once again fallen prey to train delays. According to sources, multiple services that were scheduled to run between morning and evening failed to reach their destinations on time. A list released by the Railways shows that the delays have impacted everything from suburban locals to mail and express trains.
Railway officials have attributed the disruptions to routine maintenance and track-cleaning work. They confirmed that pressure on the system peaked around 8 a.m., when an early-morning local from Howrah experienced congestion that cascaded into subsequent services. A midday mail train also ran slightly behind schedule after 12 p.m. Despite the slowdowns, authorities say they are closely monitoring the situation to minimise inconvenience to passengers.
Experts point out that keeping rail services punctual in a city as dense as Kolkata is inherently challenging. The ongoing maintenance work has further reduced train speeds, prompting the Railways to publish a real-time list of affected services and revised timings.
