Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh (formerly known as Allahabad) is reeling under a severe heatwave. According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures have been steadily rising since yesterday afternoon. Forecasts suggest that the mercury could cross 45°C in the next few days, which is 5-7°C above normal. Weather experts have warned that this could lead to a crisis for public life.
Local authorities have already issued advisories. School and college timings have been adjusted, reducing the midday schedule. Government and private offices have voluntarily allowed employees to leave after 3 PM. Dr. Rajesh Mishra, the Chief Medical Officer of Prayagraj, has reported a rise in heat-related illnesses, with the elderly and children being particularly vulnerable.
Water scarcity has also reached alarming levels. With water levels in major reservoirs plummeting, residents are struggling for drinking water. Municipal sources indicate that while the daily demand is around 30 lakh litres, only 20 lakh litres are being supplied. Additionally, power disruptions are worsening the situation, as surging demand for electricity has led to frequent load shedding.
