Traders staged a massive protest on Monday against alleged police brutality during a crackdown in Delhi’s Sadar Bazaar area. Local shopkeepers allege that police officers beat them indiscriminately and vandalised their stores without provocation, causing heavy losses.
Rakesh Gupta, president of the local traders’ association, said several shopkeepers suffered serious injuries and their merchandise was damaged during the police operation. “The police launched the action without any prior warning. When we protested, they started beating us. It is completely wrong,” he said, adding that the incident has demoralised traders who are now demanding justice for their rights.
Defending the police action, DCP (North) Ravi Kumar said officers had received information that some shopkeepers were involved in illegal activities, prompting the operation. He maintained that the police took necessary steps to maintain law and order and promised an inquiry if any shopkeeper suffered damage.
