Kolkata Knight Riders’ hopes of qualifying for the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs were dashed on Sunday despite a late surge in form, as they finished outside the top four for the second consecutive season. The team’s campaign, which began with five losses in their first six matches, saw a brief resurgence with a series of victories, but early setbacks proved decisive in their elimination.
Skipper Ajinkya Rahane addressed the mounting pressure on the team and himself after the string of defeats, dismissing any thoughts of stepping down as captain or taking a break from the playing XI. Speaking to the media after their loss to Delhi Capitals, the 37-year-old reiterated his commitment to the role and his belief in staying grounded amid criticism. “We as cricketers are where we are because of the fans. They will appreciate when we do well and criticize when we underperform. This is part of the game,” Rahane stated. He emphasized the importance of character, particularly during challenging times, and dismissed any notions of stepping back. “When the team struggles, that is where you show your character. Pressure will come; it’s very natural. Those who are privileged have to handle it. Not everyone can,” he added.
