India’s national selectors are preparing to meet in the coming days to chart a new course for the national T20 team, with the immediate focus on the uncertain future of Suryakumar Yadav and the opening partnership debate. The discussions come at a time when Shubman Gill, India’s Test and ODI captain, has reignited his claim for a spot in the shortest format after a strong showing in the 2026 Indian Premier League.
Gill’s place in the T20 side had appeared secure in August 2025 when he was named vice-captain. However, inconsistent performances led to his omission from the T20 World Cup squad announced in December 2025. The selectors’ decision at the time was described as both bold and justified. Yet, Gill has responded emphatically in IPL 2026, particularly for Gujarat Titans, where he has amassed 618 runs in 14 innings at an average of over 44 and a strike rate of 159.28—both career bests in the IPL. He has struck 30 sixes this season, six more than in the previous edition, and has led his side into the Qualifier II against Rajasthan Royals at home in New Chandigarh.
