The Karnataka government is gearing up to introduce fresh land-use norms aimed at the effective utilisation of vacant lands across the state and to spur urban development. Under these new rules, authorities will identify vacant plots and re-purpose them for public-welfare schemes. Official sources in the government state that a comprehensive list of such lands has already been prepared; these plots will now be earmarked for housing schemes, public amenities, parks and other developmental projects.
To streamline the conversion of vacant lands, the Urban Development Department and the Department of Land Records plan to set up a special task force. This team will compile data on the location, size, ownership and current use of these plots before submitting a detailed report on their optimal utilisation. The move is expected to ease the problem of vacant lands in urban pockets and pave the way for enhanced civic facilities.
