Ranchi, May 25: Four Indian athletes delivered standout performances on the concluding day of the Federation athletics meet at the Birsa Munda Stadium here, securing their places for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Among them, shot putter Samardeep Singh Gill, triple jumper Praveen Chithravel, and hurdlers P. Yashas and T. Santhosh Kumar all crossed the qualifying marks, marking a strong finish to the three-day event.
Samardeep Singh Gill delivered a career-defining throw, upsetting his idol Tajinderpal Toor to win gold in the men’s shot put. Competing at a venue where he had previously won gold at both the National Open and South Asian meets last year, Samardeep crossed the 20-metre mark for the first time in his career. His best effort of 20.46 metres came in his third attempt, surpassing Toor’s 20.07 metres and 20.06 metres in the first and last attempts respectively. Speaking after the win, Samardeep emphasised the importance of mindset, saying, “It’s all about the mindset. Once I crossed 20m, I felt a lot better.” He now meets the Commonwealth Games qualification standard of 20.36 metres.
