Mumbai, May 31, 2026: The Indian music world bid adieu to one of its most beloved voices as veteran playback singer Suman Kalyanpur passed away at her residence in Lokhandwala, Mumbai, on Sunday evening. She was 89. The cause of her death was age-related complications, according to a close friend. Mangala Khadilkar, who authored the Marathi biography *Suman Sugandh*, told PTI that Suman Kalyanpur passed away peacefully around 8 pm, surrounded by the music she loved. “For the last few days, she was listening to her own songs,” Khadilkar shared.
Born Suman Hemmady on January 28, 1937, in Dhaka—then part of undivided India—she rose to prominence during the 1960s and 1970s, carving out a distinguished identity alongside legends like Lata Mangeshkar. Though often compared to the melody queen, Suman Kalyanpur never let the comparisons define her. In a 2022 interview with PTI, she reflected fondly on her relationship with Mangeshkar, calling her a close friend. “Everyone loved her songs, and she will be immortal,” she said. “We recorded a duet together for the film *Chaand*. Every time I met her, it felt like I met a close friend.” The two shared a bond that transcended professional rivalry, rooted in mutual respect and artistic admiration.
