Bengaluru city celebrated Bakrid with unabated fervour. This year’s major Bakrid namaz was held at Gandhi Maidan. The event, which began at sunrise, drew thousands of Muslim devotees. The sprawling grounds of Gandhi Maidan were readied for the prayers. Led by the imam, the namaz lasted about seven hours. Local Muslim leaders and police officers were on hand to oversee security arrangements.
Yet the weather posed a stiff challenge. During the prayers, the temperature soared to 40 °C. To shield themselves from the intense sun, worshippers arrived with umbrellas and coverings. Official data from the India Meteorological Department showed this was five degrees above the seasonal norm. Even so, the faithful braved the heat to take part in the festival.
After the namaz, heavy traffic snarls choked the surrounding roads. Streets around Gandhi Maidan were packed solid during the prayers. According to the police, the congestion persisted for roughly two hours. Many vehicles were stranded, disrupting public transport as well. Officers gave priority to emergency services during the gridlock.
