Customers may soon get multiple ethanol-blended petrol options at pumps, with choice based on vehicle type

New Delhi: Indian fuel pumps could soon let motorists pick from several ethanol-blended petrol grades—E20, E22, E25 and E30—tailored to their vehicles. The government is preparing to roll out these higher-ethanol blends at retail outlets as part of its drive to cut crude oil imports and promote cleaner fuels.
To make this possible, the Ministry has directed state-run oil majors Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), as well as private players like Jio-BP Mobility, Nayara Energy and Shell, to set up the necessary infrastructure. Each pump will have to install separate storage tanks, blending systems and quality-monitoring setups. Dispensers will display the exact ethanol percentage in bold, so buyers can match the blend to their engine’s compatibility and performance needs.
