Durgapur, West Bengal – A senior leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Durgapur, West Bengal, was arrested on Thursday in connection with an incident of post-poll violence, the party alleged that the move was a politically motivated vendetta following the recent Lok Sabha elections.
According to officials, the arrest took place in Durgapur’s Bidhannagar area. The arrested person has been identified as Rajib Banerjee, a local TMC leader and former municipal councillor. Police sources stated that Banerjee was taken into custody based on complaints filed by residents alleging involvement in clashes and intimidation following the conclusion of the general elections on June 1.
The TMC, however, dismissed the charges as baseless and accused the state administration of targeting its workers under the pretext of law and order. , a senior TMC spokesperson, told reporters that Banerjee had no criminal background and that the arrest was part of a systematic crackdown on opposition leaders in the region. “This is clearly an attempt to suppress TMC workers after the elections,” Mondal said.
