Tambaram’s long-neglected pedestrian subway connecting GST Road and Velachery Main Road is finally set for a major transformation. The underground passage, inaugurated in 2018 beneath the Tambaram flyover, has remained locked and largely unused due to poor maintenance, safety concerns, and alleged structural issues. The Tambaram Corporation has now initiated a ₹4-crore redevelopment project, beginning with a comprehensive clean-up drive under the “Clean & Green Tambaram” initiative.
On May 27, Tambaram MLA and Minister for Human Resources Management, D. Sarathkumar, along with the Chengalpattu Collector, reviewed the ongoing cleaning and safety measures around the subway. Tambaram Corporation Commissioner S. Balachandran confirmed that model designs for the redevelopment are ready, and the project is expected to be completed within a few months after securing the required clearances. The civic body plans to transform the eastern side of the subway into a vibrant food court and recreational hub.
