Escalation in the three-month-old West Asia war continued on Monday (June 1, 2026) after the United States conducted airstrikes on Iranian military installations along the Gulf coast over the weekend. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed it had launched retaliatory missile and drone strikes on a U.S. air base in southern Iran the same day, marking the latest in a series of tit-for-tat exchanges despite an ongoing ceasefire.
According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the American strikes were a direct response to what it described as “aggressive Iranian actions,” including the shootdown of a U.S. MQ-1 drone operating over international waters. CENTCOM stated that U.S. fighter aircraft neutralized Iranian air defenses, a ground control station, and two one-way attack drones that posed imminent threats to vessels transiting regional waters. The statement emphasized that the U.S. will continue to safeguard its assets and interests during the ongoing ceasefire negotiations. “We remain committed to protecting freedom of navigation and regional stability,” a CENTCOM spokesperson said.
