Two residential houses in the city were broken into within hours of each other on Sunday night, with thieves making off with valuables worth an estimated ₹50 lakh. The incidents have left residents in the affected neighborhoods shaken and prompted police to launch investigations into the two separate but nearly simultaneous burglaries.
According to police sources, the first break-in occurred around 10:30 PM in a house located in the upscale Civil Lines area. The residents were away at the time, and the intruders entered through a rear window that had been left unlocked. The thieves targeted the master bedroom and living room, stealing gold jewelry, cash, and electronic devices including a laptop and smartwatch. A preliminary estimate by the police puts the loss at approximately ₹30 lakh.
Just an hour later, another house in the nearby cantonment area was targeted. In this case, the burglars forced open a back door using a crowbar. The occupants of the house were asleep on the first floor when the theft took place. Items stolen included gold ornaments, foreign currency, and high-end smartphones. Police have valued the loss in this incident at around ₹20 lakh.
