Tiruvallur district authorities rescued 49 bonded labourers, including 41 adults and eight children, from a gaushala in Uthukottai on Monday. The workers, all hailing from Chhattisgarh, had been lured to the facility with the promise of daily wages—₹400 for men and ₹300 for women—but were allegedly subjected to forced labour, physical abuse, and denial of medical care.
According to officials, the labourers arrived at the Gokul Krishna gaushala in Devandavakkam village on May 5 and were made to work for 12 hours daily without receiving any wages. When they demanded their pending payments before returning home, the gaushala owner allegedly refused and threatened to file theft complaints against them if they attempted to leave. Fearing further mistreatment, the labourers escaped and sought refuge at a local police station.
