Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi's Son Demands Proof of Her Being Alive, Questions Military Government

The son of Myanmar's former leader and democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, Kim Aris, has demanded proof of his mother's being alive. On June 19, Aung San Suu Kyi celebrated her 81st birthday, but there is still no clear information available about her condition. Kim Aris stated that if his mother is alive, the Myanmar military government should provide evidence. He also announced that he will launch a campaign among the people of Myanmar to learn about his mother's true condition. Aung San Suu Kyi has been in solitary confinement since the military coup in 2021. Recently, the Myanmar government released a statement saying that she had been moved from solitary confinement to house arrest. However, no photos or videos of Aung San Suu Kyi have been released since then. In response to the questions raised about her condition, the police released a blurry photo, which her son has termed as fake. Kim Aris said that the military government talks about transparency but is not providing any clear information about Aung San Suu Kyi's actual condition. Kim Aris has initiated an unprecedented campaign to learn about his mother's condition. He has appealed to the people of Myanmar to take to the streets and perform any of the following actions: walk 81,000 kilometers, cycle 81 miles, or run 81 kilometers. He wants to show the world through this campaign that his mother is still alive and that the questions raised about her condition should be answered. Meanwhile, Myanmar's military president, Min Aung, is currently on a visit to New Delhi. His visit has increased concerns about the situation in Myanmar at the international level. Although his visit is not directly related to Aung San Suu Kyi's condition, the international community is demanding transparency from the Myanmar military government. Aung San Suu Kyi is considered a symbol of democracy in Myanmar. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. Her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), received a massive mandate in the 2020 general elections, but her government was ousted after the military coup. Since then, there have been concerns about Aung San Suu Kyi's condition at the international level. The Myanmar military government is also not allowing Aung San Suu Kyi's lawyers to meet her, indicating that the government is seriously concerned about her condition. However, the government has repeatedly stated that Aung San Suu Kyi's condition is normal, but no concrete evidence has been provided. The issue raised by Kim Aris has become a concern not only for the people of Myanmar but also for the international community.
