Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani has assumed office today as India’s new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He succeeds General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure ended on May 30, 2024. The CDS post was created by the Government of India to enhance coordination among the three services—Army, Navy and Air Force—and ensure optimal utilisation of resources. The CDS does not have the authority to initiate war but serves as the principal military advisor to the Defence Minister. In India, decisions on war or major military operations are taken by the political leadership, including the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by the Prime Minister.
