A tense Municipal Corporation Council meeting in Madurai on Tuesday descended into acrimony as councillors and officials clashed over allegations of corruption and the demolition of the historic Karuppatti Chathiram. The session, chaired by Deputy Mayor T. Nagarajan under the supervision of Deputy Commissioners, saw participation from TVK MLAs including A. Kallanai, S.R. Thangapandiyan, M.M. Gopison, and S. Karthikeyan.
The dispute began when DMK councillor M. Jeyaram of Ward 58 challenged Minister for Energy Resources and Law R. Nirmalkumar’s public accusation that 100 Madurai Corporation councillors had engaged in financial misconduct. “How can a Minister level such derogatory allegations without valid evidence?” Jeyaram asked. He went on to state that if there was indeed a ₹200-crore irregularity, the Law Minister himself should take action. “Ministers should not make reckless statements at government functions,” he asserted.
