Tamil Nadu's Minister for Handlooms, Textiles, and Khadi, M. Vijay Balaji, has announced that the government will soon issue an order for the production of free dhotis and saris under the State welfare scheme. This decision was made after a proposal for the distribution of free dhotis and saris during the Pongal festival was placed before Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The Minister emphasized the importance of addressing the shortcomings reported last year to ensure a smoother production process.
During his visit to the Co-operative Textile Processing Mill in Erode, Minister Vijay Balaji inspected the facilities and discussed the progress of various projects with the officials. One of the key projects is the production of school uniforms, which aims to provide fabric to schools across the state. The Minister reported that of the targeted 139 lakh metres of fabric, 130 lakh metres have already reached the processing unit, while the remaining nine lakh metres are yet to arrive. Despite this, the officials have managed to process and supply 110 lakh metres of fabric to the School Education Department in three phases. The Minister assured that the remaining fabric would be completed and dispatched to schools before the end of this month.
