The recently concluded local body elections in Gujarat have dealt a major blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Party leader Manoj Sorathiya is making headlines after suffering a crushing defeat in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) elections. Sorathiya, who contested from the Majura ward in Surat, lost by a huge margin to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. The result is seen as a major setback for the party, especially since Surat was considered one of AAP’s strategically important seats.
The results of the local body elections were declared on February 22, 2024. The Surat Municipal Corporation elections featured a total of 126 wards, with Manoj Sorathiya contesting from the Majura ward. As AAP’s Gujarat in-charge, Sorathiya had been actively campaigning for the party over the past few months. However, the BJP’s strong voter base in Surat led to his defeat. According to the election results, Sorathiya received just 1,245 votes, while his BJP rival secured over 11,500 votes—a margin of nearly 10,255 votes, highlighting the scale of his loss.
