The Karnataka High Court has dismissed the bail plea of Gopi Reddy Karthik Reddy, a student of Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) accused in a decades-old rape case, while issuing strong observations. Justice R. Nataraj, during the hearing, expressed deep concern over the state of law and order, stressing that stricter measures against offenders are necessary to prevent crime from becoming easier. The court remarked that the fear of law has diminished due to the lack of harsh punishment for criminals.
Justice Nataraj stated, “The fear of the law has vanished. We do not deal strictly with offenders as is done in Middle Eastern countries, which is why committing crimes has become so easy.” He added, “Perhaps people will only understand the importance of following the law when they face consequences like losing a hand or a leg. Since we live in a democracy, everyone takes it lightly.”
