India Can Save Rs 2.5 Lakh Crore by Boosting Energy Efficiency of Room Air Conditioners: Study
मुख्य बातें
- •India can save up to Rs 2.5 lakh crore by doubling the energy efficiency of room air conditioners over the next decade.
- •The country's power grid is under strain due to the growing demand for ACs, with national power demand reaching an all-time high of 270.8 GW on May 21.
- •The study recommends a long-term roadmap to raise AC efficiency standards and reduce peak demand by 10 GW by 2030 and 47 GW by 2035.
- •Efficient ACs can save consumers an estimated Rs 8 lakh crore in avoided power infrastructure investment and deliver net savings of Rs 90,000-2.5 lakh crore by 2035.
- •The study finds that efficiency is not the main driver of retail prices, and with the right policy support, higher efficiency can go hand in hand with lower costs.
A recent study from the India Energy and Climate Center (IECC) at the University of California, Berkeley, has found that India can prevent power shortages and save consumers up to Rs 2.5 lakh crore by doubling the energy efficiency of room air conditioners (ACs) over the next decade. The country's power grid is under strain as the summer heat intensifies, with national power demand reaching an all-time high of 270.8 GW on May 21, according to a power ministry official. The official added that the extensive use of ACs in urban and semi-urban areas has contributed to this surge in demand.
