Vijayawada’s ongoing rehabilitation work on the Indrakeeladri Ghat Road, a key route leading to the historic Kanaka Durga Temple, has been temporarily suspended due to extreme heatwave conditions gripping the city. The joint initiative by the Endowments Department and the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department began on May 26, aiming to upgrade the tollgate-to-hilltop stretch. Originally scheduled for completion by June 12, the project has now been paused indefinitely as authorities assess weather conditions.
In an official communication sent to temple authorities on Thursday, the R&B Sub-Division Deputy Executive Engineer cited the intense heatwave as the primary reason for halting the repairs. According to department officials, performing bitumen and chemical-based road repairs under such extreme temperatures is not technically feasible and could result in premature cracking and surface damage. The letter emphasized that continuing the work in current conditions would compromise the quality and durability of the road. Consequently, the R&B Department formally requested the temple authorities to revise the work schedule until temperatures return to normal levels.
