The results for JEE Advanced 2026 have been declared, and the admission process for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is set to begin. During this phase, discussions around seat allocation and reservation policies are gaining attention. Notably, IITs have introduced a special supernumerary seat scheme to boost female participation. These seats are exclusively reserved for women candidates, which means that even if a female student secures a relatively higher rank, she may still secure admission to an IIT.
This special seat arrangement for female students is implemented across all IITs in the country. Its primary goal is to encourage greater participation of women in engineering education. Supernumerary seats are additional seats beyond the regular intake, meaning they do not reduce the number of seats available for general or other reserved categories. According to the current policy, approximately 20% of supernumerary seats in IITs are reserved for women. Experts suggest that if female candidates select their preferred institutes and courses carefully, they stand a good chance of admission even with a higher rank. In several cases, female students with ranks as high as 25,000 have secured admission to IITs.
