Thiruvananthapuram, June 12 — The appointment of Kerala’s State Election Commission (SEC) Chief Secretary, K. Sasidharan, as the personal secretary to Congress Legislative Party (CLP) Leader V.D. Satheesan has ignited a fresh political controversy in the state. The move, confirmed on Wednesday, has drawn sharp criticism from both the ruling CPI(M) and the BJP, who allege that it raises serious questions about the impartiality of the recently concluded Assembly elections.
The CPI(M), which leads the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government, argued that the appointment could undermine public trust in the electoral process. “When a high-ranking official of the Election Commission is given a key role in the office of the Leader of the Opposition just months after conducting Assembly elections, it raises serious doubts about the fairness of the polls,” said CPI(M) state secretariat member Elamaram Kareem. The party demanded an explanation from the state government, accusing it of attempting to manipulate political narratives through administrative appointments.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is the principal opposition in the state, went a step further, calling the Congress party a “hypocrite” for raising concerns over alleged interferences in independent institutions. “The Congress is the same party that has consistently interfered in the functioning of institutions like the Kerala Public Service Commission and the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau,” said BJP state president K. Surendran. He accused the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) of practicing double standards by now benefiting from such appointments.
Congress leaders, however, defended the appointment, stating that Sasidharan’s role is administrative and not related to electoral matters. “The Chief Secretary’s appointment is purely on an official basis to manage official records and correspondence. It has nothing to do with the conduct of elections,” said KPCC president and former minister, Mullappally Ramachandran. He added that such support is common in parliamentary democracies and should not be politicised.
The controversy comes at a time when Kerala’s political landscape remains deeply polarised following closely contested Assembly elections in April 2024, where the LDF retained power with a slim majority. The opposition has repeatedly alleged irregularities in polling and vote counting, though the Election Commission has denied any wrongdoing. Sasidharan, a senior IAS officer, has served in various key roles in the state government and was appointed SEC Chief Secretary in 2022.
Political observers note that such appointments are not unprecedented but gain significance in the context of heightened political sensitivities. The issue is likely to be raised during the upcoming monsoon session of the Kerala Assembly, adding to the ongoing debate over institutional autonomy and political interference in Kerala.
