Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has sharply criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi following a fresh hike in petrol and diesel prices, the fourth such increase in less than two weeks. Gandhi, addressing the issue via a post on X, accused the Prime Minister of systematically burdening the public by raising fuel costs in installments, a move he believes is designed to "quietly fleece" consumers. He labelled PM Modi as "mehangai maanav" (inflation man), asserting that the Prime Minister's primary role is to make grand promises during elections and then target the public's pockets thereafter.
Gandhi's remarks came on Monday, May 25, 2026, after state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) increased petrol prices by Rs 2.61 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre. He pointed out that following the conclusion of major state elections, fuel prices have cumulatively risen by approximately Rs 8 per litre since revisions resumed on May 15. Gandhi stated that he had been warning for months about an impending economic storm, but claimed that PM Modi was preoccupied with election campaigns during that period.
