Jodhpur (Rajasthan) – Religious guru Asaram Bapu has received a major setback. The Rajasthan High Court has upheld his life imprisonment sentence in the case of rape of a minor girl. The court pronounced its verdict in this regard on Thursday. Following this, Asaram surrendered at the Jodhpur Central Jail. Asaram was accused of raping a minor girl at his ashram in 2013.
In this case, in 2018, Special Judge Anju Joshi had convicted Asaram and sentenced him to life imprisonment. After this, Asaram had appealed in the High Court, but now the High Court has dismissed his appeal. Asaram's lawyers had sought remission in the sentence considering the accused's age and health, but the court rejected it.
The case against Asaram came to light in 2013 when the victim filed a complaint with the police. The victim had alleged that Asaram had called her to his ashram and raped her. Following this, the National Commission for Women (NCW) and the state government had also intervened in the matter. Apart from this, several other cases are registered against Asaram, including allegations of sexual exploitation and human trafficking by him.
