Mumbai, May 23 – Leaders from several opposition parties in Maharashtra staged a protest on a highway on Thursday, demanding that the state government ensure a minimum support price (MSP) of ₹3,000 per quintal for onions. The demonstration, led by prominent political figures, took place on the Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, disrupting traffic and drawing widespread attention to the issue of farmer distress amid volatile onion prices.
The protest was organized by opposition coalitions including the Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and other allies. Speaking to reporters during the demonstration, senior Congress leader Nana Patole criticized the state government for failing to provide adequate relief to onion farmers, who have been facing severe financial losses due to plummeting market prices. “Onion farmers are suffering. The government must intervene and guarantee a fair price,” Patole said.
