In the IPL 2026 Eliminator, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s stormy innings may not have saved Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) from defeat, but it etched his name in the record books. Chasing a mammoth 244-run target, Rajasthan Royals (RR) needed a blistering start, and Vaibhav delivered with a whirlwind 97 off 29 balls. Though his heroics couldn’t secure victory, they ensured his place in the history books.
Vaibhav’s 29-ball cameo featured 12 sixes and five fours, propelling him past Chris Gayle’s 14-year-old record for the most sixes in a single IPL season. Gayle had smashed 59 sixes in 2012, while Vaibhav has now struck 65 this season. However, he narrowly missed Gayle’s record for the fastest IPL century, finishing on 97 after a misjudged shot. “I wasn’t thinking about the hundred,” Vaibhav admitted. “I saw the fielder and tried to hit through the off-side instead of the third man. If I’d played it there, it would’ve been a six.”
