The TV serial ‘Ramayan’, produced by Ramanand Sagar, made television history in 1987. The show captured the hearts of millions and its characters are still revered like deities. Among its most iconic roles was that of Ravana, essayed by Arvind Trivedi. But did you know that Trivedi had not originally auditioned for the part of Ravana? His audition was meant for the character of Kevat, yet Ramanand Sagar chose him to play Ravana instead.
In an old interview, Trivedi recalled that when he heard about ‘Ramayan’, he had come to Mumbai from Gujarat to audition. He said that most people expected Amrish Puri to be cast as Ravana. Puri, a celebrated actor of the time, seemed perfectly suited to the role. However, when Trivedi auditioned, Sagar was struck by his body language and attitude and declared, “I’ve found my Ravana.” Thus, Trivedi landed the role.
