Politics in West Bengal has once again been hit by a storm. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee suffered another major blow on Thursday, 28 May 2026, when former Rajya Sabha MP and TMC national spokesperson Dr. Santanu Sen resigned from his position. Just a day earlier, on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, TMC Lok Sabha MP and president of the party’s women’s wing Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar had also resigned from all her party posts. Thus, the TMC leadership has taken a significant hit with the departures of two key figures.
Dr. Santanu Sen conveyed his resignation to TMC chief Mamata Banerjee in a letter. In his letter, he stated that while he had disagreed with several of the party’s stances during challenging times, he had publicly defended the party’s contentious positions in the media on multiple occasions, an effort that was often appreciated by the public. However, in the current circumstances—when West Bengal’s people are disillusioned with the TMC over issues like the RG Kar case, the Abhaya case, cash-for-jobs corruption, and other unethical activities—he no longer feels prepared to support the party as its spokesperson. He wrote, “Therefore, keeping in mind the people’s decision, I wish to resign from the post of All India Spokesperson of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Please accept and acknowledge my resignation.”
