Tamil Nadu Minister for Law, R. Nirmalkumar, has stressed the need for modernizing the prison administration in the state. Speaking to journalists after inspecting the Central Prison at Puzhal near Chennai on Sunday, May 24, 2026, the Minister emphasized the importance of adopting digital technologies to simplify and strengthen the screening process for visitors coming to meet inmates. This move aims to prevent the smuggling of prohibited items, including narcotic substances, into prisons.
The Minister also highlighted the need to ensure that all prison facilities meet the basic requirements of inmates. During the inspection of the Puzhal Central Prison, which houses 1,500 inmates, Mr. Nirmalkumar ordered an assessment of the equipment required for hospitals and other essential amenities, including drinking water supply. He further stated that the Law Department would explore the possibilities of extending legal aid to remand prisoners who continue to remain in prison beyond the stipulated period.
